Obituary of Robert Stroud

Robert Stroud was born December 27, 1930, at Aikin Grove, a small community south of Clarksville in Red River County, Texas, the son of Graydon and Virgie Bean Stroud. He departed this life and went to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Thurdsay, November 22, 2012 at Hunt County Regional Medical Center in Greenville, Texas. Private graveside services will be held at Lanes Chapel Cemetery in Clarksville on the morning of Monday, November 26, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held the same day at 1:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Clarksville. The Rev. Mark Gossett will officiate. Services are under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home. A memorial visitation will be held in Greenville at the Peters Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Robert spent his life in Clarksville before moving to Greenville in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Don Stroud, and a step-father, C.B. Bolton. Onl June 3, 1951 he and Martha Sue Claiborne, high school sweethearts, were married at the First Baptist Church where they had both been saved and baptized at early ages. They were blessed with two sons, Steven Claiborne and Paul Robert and a beloved grandson, Hunter Stroud. Survivors include his wife, sons, grandson and a soon to be member of the family, Cathy Ward. Also surviving are his brother’s three children, Patrice Stroud Searsy and Graydon and Warren Stroud; many loving in-laws, cousins and life long friends. Robert retired from the Red River Army Depot after 32 years as a Computer Systems Analyst. When he was a senior in Clarksville High School, he enlisted as a Recruit in the Army National Guard when a Recruiter came to the school. He stayed in the National Guard and Army Reserves and was on active duty during the Berlin and Cuban Crises and served as a Instructor, retiring after 30 years as a Lt. Colonel. He then did custom framing, refinished furniture and enjoyed working in the yard and the years the spent in the country before moving to Greenville. At the age of 24, Robert was ordained as a Deacon at First Baptist Church, taught the Believers’ Sunday School Class for over 30 years, and shared doing the Sunday Morning Sunday School Lesson over the radio, with his good friend, Dr. C.B. Reed. After moving to Greenville, the Strouds moved their membership to the Highland Terrace Baptist Church and are members of the Believers’ Sunday School Class. Robert will be remembered by those who knew him as a kind and gentle Christian man who loved his Lord, his family and especially his precious grandson, Hunter, who is now 12 years old and in the 7th grade. Not long ago Hunter said this to his Grandma, “I just wish my Grandad could be like he used to be.” In Clarksville memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Red River County Public Library and the Lanes Chapel Cemetery. In Greenville memorials may be made to the Highland Terrace Baptist Church.
