Obituary of Dwight Dee Hopper
Dwight Dee Hopper, of Dalby Springs, passed away of a heart attack on December 8, 2015, at the age of 61. Mr. Hopper was born February 27, 1954 to Dee Hopper and Lela Gertru Northcutt-Hopper near the Lydia community in Red River County. He is survived by his siblings James Arelus Hopper and wife Maxine of DeKalb, Charles Larry Hopper and wife Margie of Lone Star Community, Sheila Beth Jackson and husband Clint of Avery, Kenny Baker of Avery, and Mike Baker and wife Kathy of Longview, step-father Carl Baker of Fulbright, and seven nieces and nephews.
Dwight was born in Red River County Hospital and grew up in Avery behind Medford’s store then at the intersection of Highway 82 and FM 911. While young, Dwight was the out-going and the vivacious sibling. He played baseball and attended Avery schools. Dwight was valedictorian of his 8th grade class but passed the honor to the salutatorian because he was too shy to give the speech. In 1969, Dwight moved to Fulbright community as part of a new blended family when his mother remarried. Dwight worked in the family plumbing and carpentry business with his step-father. He graduated from Rivercrest High School in 1972.
In 1972 Dwight joined the U.S. Air Force immediately after high school and served his country until 1982. He was primarily stationed in Minot, ND where he specialized in electronic systems repair. After leaving the service he moved to Dalby Springs and began working at Red River Army Depot. There he used his specialized skills to maintain sophisticated control systems until his retirement in 2009. Dwight was an avid reader and old movie and comedy enthusiast. He could repair almost anything and was multi-talented. He often took children’s electronic toys home to fix. He had a soft spoken and gentle spirit but strong will to live. He never forgot family birthdays, and his gifts reflected the great thought he put into making them special. His retirement time was spent maintaining his place and assisting his mother and step-father through health issues. He was faithful to visit and help everyone. Mr. Hopper’s sudden death was unexpected.
Family visitation will be Wednesday December 9, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00pm at Clarksville Funeral Home. Funeral service is set for3:30 p.m. Thursday December 10, 2015, in Lindeman Chapel of Clarksville Funeral Home with Rev. H.D. Deanie Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in Lydia Cemetery under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.
