Obituary of Inez Mitchell
“Mittie” Inez Mitchell, age 99 and formerly of Clarksville, passed away April 9, 2013, at Tomball Regional Hospital in Tomball, Texas. She was born May 26, 1913, in Deport to Sam and Ollie Campbell Westbrook and was a resident of Red River County for 90 years. Inez was a long-standing member of First Baptist Church, Clarksville, and a faithful member of the Faith Sunday School class. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition, she was a dedicated educator, receiving her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education from East Texas State Teacher’s College in Commerce. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher's Society and Texas Retired Teachers' Association. Inez taught for a total of 48 years in Red River County, first in the one-room rural McCoy School and then the remainder in Clarksville ISD as a first-grade teacher. She is remembered by her family and friends as a generous and protective soul, in addition to being a wonderful cook.
Inez is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Douglas Mitchell; her parents; her brothers, Clyde Westbrook and Robert Westbrook and her sisters, Berta Mae Humphrey, Hesta Lee Westbrook and Gladys Thomas.
A celebration of life service for Inez in scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the First Baptist Church of Clarksville with Rev. Mark Gossett officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.
Survivors include her daughter, Sheryl Messer and husband George of Pinehurst; two brothers, John Westbrook and wife Ruth of Avery and Maurice Westbrook and wife Dorothy of Longview; 2 grandchildren, Jeffrey Douglas Messer and wife Kelley of Abilene and Kara Messer McAfee and husband Trey of Houston; 5 great grandchildren, Kathlyn, Melia and Reid Messer all of Abilene and Macy and Jack McAfee of Houston and numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers are her nine nephews: Mack Humphrey, Don Humphrey, Sammy Humphrey, Jimmy Westbrook, Don Westbrook, Sam Westbrook, Gary Thomas, Jim Thomas and Mark Thomas.
